The modern campus is situated just 5km south of the historic centre of the great city of Amsterdam in the fast-growing business district. VU stands for free university (Vrije Universiteit) and it was established in 1880 by Abraham Kuyper. A broad range of Bachelor courses is offered in English from Cultural Anthropology to Developmental Sociology and Communication and Information Sciences. With its elaborate canal system and cycle tracks Amsterdam is a city of surprises – full of little lanes canals and pretty bridges and narrow gabled facades dating from the 17th century. Tourists are drawn by its treasure packed museums – Rembrandt Van Gogh – the Anne Frank House the red light district and the coffee houses and much more. Amsterdam has excellent transport links and an international airport Schipol with flights all over the world.
