Victoria University

Overview

Founded in 1836 and named for Queen Victoria, ‘Vic’ was federated with the University of Toronto in 1890. It comprises Victoria College, an arts and science institution, and Emmanuel, a theological college. It has a distinguished reputation and many notable alumni, including the novelist Margaret Atwood and Arthur Schawlow, a Nobel laureate and co-inventor of the laser. Students have access to the full range of undergraduate courses offered by the University of Toronto and the college offers Vic One, a distinctive program for first year students. The fine campus is adjacent to St George campus. Toronto is on the south western shore of Lake Ontario and this provincial capital is the largest city in Canada. It is perhaps the most multi-culturally diverse city in the world. Half Toronto’s residents were born outside Canada. The Art Gallery of Toronto, adjacent to OCAD, houses the best collection of Canadian artworks. Cultural events include an International Film Festival and the city has some excellent restaurants and eateries. Toronto has very good transport links and is within easy reach of Niagara Falls and beautiful landscapes.
