Established as Malaspina College in 1969, the institution became VIU in 2008. It has a number of campuses on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island facing the Strait of Georgia in southwest Canada. A number of bachelor courses are offered, for example in Jazz Studies, Nursing, and Psychology. The main site in Nanaimo is 2 hours 45 minutes by ferry across the Strait of Georgia from Vancouver. Victoria is 113km to the South. The 92 acre Nanaimo campus boasts forested areas, a Japanese garden and ocean views and the Aquatic Centre with an Olympic sized pool. This beautiful area offers outdoor activities in both winter and summer, including skiing and surfing.
