Sunderland is situated on the coast in the northeast of England, 22km southeast of Newcastle-upon Tyne. There are good transport links and the train to Newcastle only takes 19 minutes. Sunderland Technical College was founded in 1901 and expanded rapidly, gaining university status in 1992. It has two campuses in Sunderland, in the city centre and by the sea close to long stretches of sandy beaches with plenty of opportunities for watersports. A range of courses including HND/C, foundation and honours degrees is offered and many are applied with the opportunity of a work placement. First year undergraduates are guaranteed accommodation. In 2012 a campus was opened at Canary Wharf in London which offers a limited number of degrees.
