With the amalgamation of two 19th century colleges the university was founded in 1969. UPEI offers a broad range of undergraduate programs and all first years take a mandatory course in either writing, global studies or university studies. It has a strong international exchange program and all international students are paired with a Canadian to make them feel at home. The 140 acre campus in Charlottetown with its historic quadrangle and red-brick buildings is a mix of old and new structures. Prince Edward Island is in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, separated from Nova Scotia to the South and New Brunswick to the West by the Northumberland Strait. Built in 1997 the world’s longest artificial bridge (13km) over ice covered waters links the island to New Brunswick. Ferries cross to Nova Scotia and Charlottetown has an international airport. The red-sand beaches and rich red farmland give the island a distinctive flavour. The rolling green hills, wandering trails – the Confederation Trail is one of the world’s best cycling destinations – golf courses and endless beaches make summertime idyllic. Charlottetown is a charming small town with its theatres and eateries. The island is renowned for its sea-food. Winters can be harsh.
