Founded in 1848 this public research university is the world’s largest bilingual university. Students can learn in French or English or both languages. It offers a broad range of bachelor programs. The main campus in Sandy Hill by the Rideau Canal boasts a mixture of historic and modern buildings. The Social Sciences building, opened in 2012, has a six storey living wall and gains 80% of its heating needs through heat distribution. There is a smaller campus at Lees Avenue and other sites are scattered around the city. The university boasts a huge library at 12 different locations and a Museum of Classical Antiquities. The city of Ottawa, the capital of Canada, was created in the 19th century and regards itself as a big city with a small town feel. It is primarily the seat of government, but boasts great museums, restaurants, shopping and a vibrant cultural life. Situated in the South of Ontario, it is picturesque with its many waterways, parks and green spaces. The historic Rideau Canal with its steep step-like locks is a UNESCO world heritage site. Lake Ontario is 200km to the South and Montreal is 200km to the East. Ottawa has an international airport.
