Established in 2003 UOIT emphasises the development of practical skills and offers a technology-enriched learning environment. The campus reflects the university’s technology emphasis in other ways with its advanced environmental features, including green roofs and geothermal energy. It offers a number of applied bachelor programs, including in Data Science, Networking and Information Technology Security and Manufacturing Engineering. It has two main campuses, the larger is in north Oshawa and the other is in downtown Oshawa. The name Oshawa derives from an Ojibwa term meaning ‘the crossing place’. The town was once the centre for the Canadian automotive industry and is home to the Canadian Automotive Museum. An Automotive Centre of Excellence is located on the North Campus. Today the town is an education and health-sciences hub. It is located on the shore of Lake Ontario about 60km east of Toronto. Road links are very good and Toronto’s International Airport is within easy reach.
