Founded in 1966 this small university with its signature Arthur Erickson building occupies a 500 acre site on the west bank of Old Man River in Lethbridge, southern Alberta. It offers a good range of undergraduate programs. Originally populated by several First Nations peoples, Lethbridge started to develop at the end of the 19th century because of coal. The small city is bisected by the distinctive coulees (valleys) of Old Man River, which is spanned by the longest and tallest railway bridge of its type in the world. Lethbridge has a slightly milder winter climate than the rest of Alberta because of the Chinook winds. It is within easy reach of the Rocky Mountains and the USA to the South. It has a small airport with regular flights to Calgary and is served by Red Arrow and Greyhound buses.
