Derby on the river Derwent and home to the aero-engine manufacturer Rolls Royce is situated to the north of the Midlands with good road and rail links to Birmingham and London. The beautiful Peak District National Park is reachable by car in about 35 minutes. The roots of the university lie in the Women’s Teacher Training College, founded in 1851, and university status was conferred in 1992.The majority of courses are taught at the Derby campus, but Hospitality and Outdoor courses are studied in the beautiful spa town of Buxton in the Peak District which is less than 40km from Manchester and to where there is a good rail link. Nursing is taught in Chesterfield, 48km north of Derby and just east of the Peak District. Chesterffield’s best known landmark is the Crooked Spire of the parish church.
