Founded in 1970 and known as UQAT since 1983 this teaching and research institution belongs to the francophone Université de Québec network. It has three campuses and six regional centres. It offers a good range of baccalauréat (1er cycle) programs in French and a very few in English, including in Aboriginal Studies. The three campuses are in northern Québec. Rouyn Noranda, a small town, 637km north of Toronto is home to the largest campus and boasts bold modern architecture. Val d’Or lies 105km east of Rouyn Noranda. The town centre campus has buildings, which pay tribute to Aboriginal cultures. A 12 metre high tee-pee stands in the foyer of the First Peoples Pavilion. Amos, about 67km to the north, is the centre for education in the Abtibi region and offers a baccalauréat in Forestry. Rouyn Noranda has an airport with regular flights to Toronto, Montréal and Québec.
