This francophone research and teaching university was founded in 1954. It offers a broad range of undergraduate (1er cycle) courses and pioneered the cooperative programs, which allow students to put their theoretical knowledge into practice in paid work-place placements. It also offers a French as a second language program. Students have access to free public transport within the city. The main 300 hectare green campus is situated at the foot of Mont-John-S.-Bourque. There is a smaller site at Longueuil on the edge of Montréal. Sherbrooke is on the confluence of Saint-François and Magog Rivers and has a number of heritage sights, cultural opportunities and natural attractions, including Mount Bellevue Park where, in the summer months, mountain biking and hiking take over from the winter activities of snowshoeing and skiing. Sherbrooke is about 194km south of Québec and 153km east of Montréal in south eastern Canada. Road links are very good and there is a small airport.
