Dating from the 11th century this is the oldest university in the western world and is synonymous with the greatest names of science art philosophy music and literature- Thomas Beckett Erasmus of Rotterdam Copernicus and Dürer and many more. This beautiful city with its miles of arcades (Bolognese rarely carry an umbrella) beautiful architecture and mouth-watering cuisine is called the red city because of the pink stone of the many medieval buildings.
