University of Manchester

Manchester, the first great industrial city, is today a friendly, cosmopolitan and a vibrant, major cultural and entertainment centre in the northwest of England. It is home to the National Football Museum and over 100,000 students. The BBC’s Media City and the Lowry Art Gallery are close by in Salford. It has excellent transport links. The Medical School was founded in 1824 and Owen’s College in 1851. In 1903 it was reconstituted as The Victoria University of Manchester and in 2004 it amalgamated with UMIST and is now known as Manchester University. It has the largest selection of undergraduate courses in the UK and students may gain extra recognition by participating in the Manchester Leadership Challenge. In 1908 Rutherford was awarded the Nobel prize while at Manchester and in 2010 Geim and Novoselov won the Nobel prize for Physics for making graphene.
