Two institutions were merged in 1996 and Tampere UAS was formed. The town is situated in southern Finland about 180km north of Helsinki. The main campus is 3km from the city centre which is on a narrow isthmus between two great lakes and close to the largest gravel ridge in the world formed by the ice age. It is the largest lake district in Europe. The university offers a number of Bachelor degrees in English including in Engineering subjects Nursing and Business. Tampere has an airport with flights to Stockholm Helsinki and Riga.
