This originally Roman Catholic institution was founded in 1910 and became degree granting in the 1960s. It is a small undergraduate liberal arts university. Students have access to the social and academic amenities of the much larger New Brunswick University. The compact campus overlooks the St John River Valley in the town. Fredericton, the provincial capital, is built on the banks of the St John River, which curves through the small city. Paths and playing fields run along its tree-lined banks. Fredericton with its Georgian and Victorian architecture and art gallery is one of the Cultural Capitals of Canada. In summer there are water sports including kayaking, walking and hiking and in winter skating and cross-country skiing. Situated in the south eastern corner of Canada, Fredericton has an international airport with direct flights to New York and London U.K.
