Established in 1936 as a Roman Catholic liberal arts college, STM is federated with the University of Saskatchewan and academically integrated. Admissions are managed by the University of Saskatchewan. Students can take courses at both institutions. In addition STM offers a Community Service Learning program; students take part in community service and volunteer work as part of their course. The College is situated on the edge of the University campus on the eastern bank of the South Saskatchewan River, just 2.3km from the city centre on the west bank. Straddling the river, which winds through the city, Saskatoon is the largest city in the province and is nicknamed Bridge City because of its 8 river crossings. The wooded Meewasin Valley, a Cree word which means ‘beautiful, is formed by the river’s wide swathe. The city is proud of its vibrant music scene, theatres, winter sporting opportunities and Wanuskewin Heritage Park, which represents 6,000 years of First Nations history. Saskatoon is on the Vancouver to Toronto railway and a main highway and the airport has flights to major Canadian cities.
