Originally known as Newcastle Polytechnic this institution is an amalgamation of a number of colleges and gained university status in 1992. By 2000 it had become the largest university in the northeast of England. It has a city centre campus in Newcastle and the Coach Lane site is 5km to its northeast. It also has a London campus. Situated on the river Tyne in the northeast of England, Newcastle with its fine bridges and quayside is within 20 minutes of the beach and close to the rugged Northumbrian countryside. It has very good transport links. A broad range of applied and traditional courses are offered and many sandwich degrees give the student the chance to study abroad or take up a work placement.
