Situated on the river Tyne in the northeast of England, the city with its fine bridges and quayside is within 20 minutes of the beach and close to the rugged Northumbrian countryside. It has excellent road, rail and air links. The School of Medicine and Surgery was founded in 1834 and Armstrong College in 1871. Initially part of the federal university of Durham, an independent university was created by Act of Parliament in 1963. This campus based university in the city centre offers a full range of traditional courses and more modern studies, for example the professionally accreditied Marine Technology with Small Craft Technology. The majority of undergraduate accommodation is reserved for first year students.
