Memorial University of Newfoundland

Overview

MUN was founded as a memorial to Newfoundlanders who lost their lives on active service in WW1 and WW2. It is a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary university. At the main campus in St John’s a broad range of undergraduate courses is available. Grenfell at Cornerbrook, on the west coast of the island, specialises in environmental and fine arts programs. St John’s is the oldest city and is the most easterly point in North America on the Atlantic seaboard. Brightly coloured Victorian, clapboard houses characterise the hilly area around the harbour. Newfoundland is a sparsely populated rocky island. Above the city on Signal Hill is the first transatlantic wireless communications site and off the coast whales are a common sight. Icebergs drift past in late spring. An international airport offers internal flights and direct links to London and New York.
