Situated in the town centre this is the largest Medical School in Poland and was established in 1948. The Dental School is in Zabrze (22km north-west of Katowice) and the Pharmaceutical Institute is in Sosnowiec (22km north of Katowice). A number of programmes are offered in English including Medicine Dentistry Pharmacy and Public Health. Katowice is the main city in Upper Silesia in southern Poland 80km west of Krakow. Its wealth was built on coal and steel. The ski resort of Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains is 178km to the south. It has a good rail service and is served by the international airport in Krakow.
