The University in this small rural town in Bulgaria in south-east Europe was the first Bulgarian institution to offer a six year Medical Degree in English (1997). Foreign students have to study the Bulgarian language alongside their other studies. Since 2007 Bulgaria has been a member state of the EU. Pleven lies 170km north-east of the capital Sofia which has a small international airport.
