This public research institution was granted a Royal Charter in 1821 and it is one of Canada’s most prestigious universities. It is just one of three English-language universities in Québec and the nation’s first faculty of Medicine. It boasts 12 Nobel laureates and is the place where Plexiglas was developed. It offers 300 study programs; the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and the School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition are on the smaller Macdonald Campus, 36km west of the city centre. The large downtown Montréal campus is proud of its historic buildings, modern architecture and beautiful green spaces. The city with its high concentration of students is regarded as one of the best student cities in the world. It is affordable, has a very good public transport system and is bicycle friendly. Montréal is situated on an island in the Saint Lawrence River and named after Mont Royal, the mountain at its heart. It is considered to be the cultural capital of Canada with its museums and galleries and music festivals, including the Festival International de Jazz, delicious food and good living. From historic Vieux Montréal with its winding streets to the Stade Olympique it boasts great architecture. Beautiful autumn colours herald cold winter months, but winter sports and cosy cafés take over. Transport links are excellent.
