The university is situated south of the river Thames in the Borough of Southwark and close to Elephant and Castle underground. Borough Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1892, and one hundred years later in 1992 was granted university status and renamed London South Bank University in 2003. Today it specialises in a broad range of courses which teach applied and vocational skills.
