LJM with its roots in the Mechanics Institute, founded in 1823, gained university status in 1992 and offers a broad range of degree courses, mostly applied or vocational, including Marine Engineering and Nautical Science. The Maritime Knowledge Hub, opened in 2000, has a 360 degree ship simulator. There are campuses in the city centre and the leafy, modern IM Marsh site where the main sports’ facilities are located is a 20 minute bus ride away. Situated in on the Mersey estuary in the northwest of England Liverpool was chosen European Capital of Culture in 2007 and a programe of regeneration has created a modern vibrant city with a beautiful waterfront . It is home to Tate Liverpool, the renowned Walker Gallery and the International Slavery Museum as well as being the birthplace of The Beatles. There are excellent road, rail and air links.
