Founded in 1946 as a college of education this public institution was granted university status in 1989. Its green modern campus which is climate neutral boasts a fine building designed by Daniel Libeskind. The aim of the university is to create a sustainable campus. It offers a number of degree programmes in English for example a BA in Global Environment and Sustainability Studies. It is situated in the north of Germany just 30 minutes (50km) from Hamburg by train and close to the beautiful Baltic Sea coast. Lüneburg has a medieval old quarter and is a friendly town packed with bars (Kneipen). It claims to have the greatest density of ‘Kneipen’ in Germany.
