Leiden University

Overview

Founded in 1575 this is the oldest university in the Netherlands and boasts a Botanic Garden dating from the 1500s from where the tulip was introduced to Western Europe. Albert Einstein taught here. The main campus is close to the compact city centre. The university offers a broad range of subjects a number of which are taught in English. These include Bachelor degrees in Archaeology Astronomy South and Southeast Asian Studies and more. At the campus in Den Haag International and Security Studies are taught. Leiden is a student city woven with canals and full of 17th century buildings and cafés. The museum houses a collection of Dutch Masters including Rembrandt who was born in Leiden. It is just 18km to the North of Den Haag the political capital and has excellent transport links.
