Founded in 1960, this mid-sized bilingual, primarily undergraduate university offers a broad range of courses in English and French. In 2005 the Northern Ontario School of Medicine was opened in collaboration with Lakehead University. A smaller campus is at Barrie, 370km to the South of Sudbury and 90km north of Toronto, on a shared campus with Georgian College. Barrie, on the western shores of Lake Simcoe is known for its ski resorts. Sudbury, 412km north of Toronto, is set round the western shores of Lake Ramsey. It owes its wealth to mining and heavy industry and was once heavily polluted, but a policy of regreening with the planting of 12 million trees has changed this. The university borders Lake Laurentian Conservation Area with its trails for running, mountain biking and Nordic skiing. The town has two fantastic science museums and is a centre for snowmobiling. There are regular flights, 8-12 daily, to Toronto.
