Goldsmiths gets its name from the city livery company, the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, which in 1891 founded itsTechnical and Recreative Institute. This was handed over to the university of London in 1904. Today the university specialises in arts design and the social sciences and adopts a flexible interdisciplinary approach to degree courses. An exciting new development is the Contemporary Art Gallery which is being built and due to host its first exhibition in 2018. It will be a contemporary art space for cutting edge and original work. Goldsmiths is situated south of the river in New Cross southeast London
