Founded in Alcalá in 1293 this public research university moved to its current site, Monocloa, in the Ciudad Universitaria area of Madrid in 1927 where the main faculties are situated. It was one of the first universities to grant a doctorate to a female student in 1785 and today is a leading venue for major Spanish film premieres. The university which collaborates with universities around the world offers some bilingual degrees, for example in Psychology. Madrid, the capital city, is situated in the geographical centre of Spain and has a renowned cultural and artistic heritage. The art galleries boast an enviable collection of works from prerenaissance to modern masters including Picasso and Miro. Picasso’s famous Guernica is in the Museo Reina Sofia. The UNESCO world heritage city of Toledo is within easy reach by train and Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, also on the railway, offer an escape from the city with the possibilty of wintersports and hiking in summer.
