Founded in 1857 this is the oldest medical university in Romania and is situated just west of the city centre. It is regarded as one of the best medical schools in the country for the study of Medicine in English. Bucharest in southern Romania is a dynamic and energetic capital city. It enjoyed a golden era at the start of the 20th century and was known as the Paris of the East. Destroyed by war and earthquakes the historic centre has been restored. Today the art nouveau style architecture and old orthodox churches stand in stark contrast to the gargantuan Palace of Parliament from the communist times. Bucharest lies in the Wallachian Plains between the Carpathian foothills and the Danube. It has an international airport and very good road and rail links.
