Overview

Established in 1971 with the amalgamation of number of institutions this univerity is situated in the ancient cathedral town of Aachen in northwest Germany close to the borders with the Netherlands and Belgium. The majority of degrees are taught in German with some modules offered in English. It offers a Freshman Year for those who may not have traditional qualifications. Several Master’s degrees, including in Aerospace Engineering and International Automotive Engineering are taught in English. The main campus is in the historical city of Aachen with its cathedral, dating back to 800AD- it is the burial place of the first Holy Roman Emperoro Charlemagne. Medieval streets and a medieval town hall blend in with more modern buildings. The town is also known for its traditional food, Aachener Printen, a kind of gingerbread only made there. It is well served by air, road and rail with intercity trains to Liege and Brussels in Belgium and the cities of Bonn and Cologne in Germany. A small airport is shared with Maastricht in the Netherlands.
