Overview

Given royal assent in 1965 LU is a public research university, which has achieved recognition for its innovative research. Fieldwork and hands-on learning are integral to many of the programs. In 2005 the North Ontario School of Medicine was opened, a joint initiative with Laurentian University of Sudbury. The campus is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Canada and buildings are connected by an underground tunnel system – especially practical in winter months. It has a second campus at Orillia which lies 1263km to the Southwest, 146km north of Toronto. Thunder Bay is 90 minutes flying time from Toronto. Thunder Bay lies on the northern shores of Lake Superior, close to the U.S. border. It is an isolated area surrounded by beautiful forests and shoreline. The regenerated downtown Entertainment District is home to creative restaurants and bars. Its name comes from the original aboriginal name Animikie meaning Thunder. There are about 15 flights a day to Toronto.
