Our Special Effects Costume for Film and TV degree course offers the practical, creative and specialist skills needed to create costumes with a special effects twist. Our fantastic facilities and industry-experienced staff are devoted to helping you fashion a career in innovative costume production for the silver screen.
In TV and film, the look of the production is as important as the script. Clothing and props help to create an atmosphere that can transport both actors and audience directly into the storyline. Fantasy, horror and science fiction costumes need to be both imaginative and visionary, as the creators conceive a post-apocalyptic future or a quasi-medieval dark world of horror.
The University of Bolton’s BDes (Hons) Special Effects Costume for Film and TV course focuses on preparing you for a career at the cutting-edge of costume production. We’ll help you learn how to integrate traditional costume-making skills and techniques with materials, techniques and processes used in other facets of the special effects industry. By following an experimental approach to your prototyping it’s possible to create new and potentially avant-garde effects.
We offer an intensely practical education in the design and manufacture of costume for special effects. We’ll lead you in an exploration of the materials, processes and tools used in the creation of costumes, including pattern cutting, toiling, fitting and finishing techniques. You’ll also have the opportunity to experiment and innovate at the intersection between the ‘soft’ techniques used for costume and the ‘hard’ resistant materials and techniques employed in the creation of accessories and props.
We’ll support you to develop your creative and technical skills, and discover how costume can work alongside special effects make-up, model-making and visual effects computer graphics to create even more spectacular on-screen transformations in an industry setting.
