We’re home to fantastic astronomy facilities, including our own teaching and outreach telescopes that you’ll use to get hands-on observation experience, as well as high performance computer and GPU clusters.
You’ll be taught by world leaders in exciting fields of research such as the nature of black holes and dark matter.
In the National Student Survey (NSS) 2018 our physics courses were ranked top 10 in the UK for overall satisfaction.
Our BSc Physics with Astronomy (with Foundation Year) course will give you a thorough understanding of all the core elements of traditional physics – such as particle physics, atoms and molecules, quantum mechanics and astrophysics. You can tailor your course by choosing from a range of optional modules, and you can also switch between any of our specialist physics degrees during your first year.
You’ll benefit from extensive facilities within our Department of Physics, including refurbished undergraduate teaching laboratories and our new student observatory for astronomy.
You will have an opportunity to undertake a research project within our research groups or choose to conduct your final year research project in our outstanding research laboratories.
This course is accredited by the UK Institute of Physics.
We’re always looking to make it easier to access the education we offer, so we have launched the option of taking a degree with a foundation year.
A foundation year is an extra year of study at the start of your course that leads in to a full degree programme. It’s a great option if:
• You don’t have the grades for a full degree course • You have non-traditional qualifications or experience • You’re starting university after some time away from education • You’re looking for more support during the transition into university study.
During a foundation year you’ll learn about your chosen subject, develop your study skills and get used to university life. On successful completion of your foundation year, you’ll be ready to progress to the first year of your degree course.
As a foundation year student, you’ll be a full student of the University and part of our community. You’ll have access to all our campus facilities and support.
