Are you torn between a career in teaching or coaching? Are you driven by helping people of all ages reach their athletic goals? Keep your career options open and study a course that combines the disciplines you really enjoy with our Physical Education and Sports Coaching degree.
You'll practise teaching in a range of settings, from primary and secondary physical education to community coaching. You'll develop an appreciation of how the disciplines of physical education and sports coaching complement each other, studying a combination of practical and theoretical modules in pedagogy, sociology of sport, sports science, research methods, sports policy and philosophy.
Our vocational approach means you'll learn by doing, applying theory to a range of practical activities such as games, athletics, outdoor adventurous activities, gymnastics and dance activities. Thanks to our fantastic employer links, you'll have the opportunity to work with schools and professional sports clubs and we'll encourage you to volunteer or work in physical education and sports coaching alongside your studies. You'll also have the opportunity to undertake coaching awards in a wide range of sports.
The flexible nature of the degree means you'll have the chance to adapt your knowledge, skills and experiences to any age group. You can also specialise in the areas that interest you the most, choosing from modules that include strength and conditioning, physical activity, sport development or enterprise.
Many of our graduates successfully go on to teacher training, becoming PE teachers and primary teachers, as well as working with professional sports clubs. You'll also be prepared for a career in performance or community coaching, as well as related careers in personal training, strength and conditioning, health and wellbeing, and sport development. You could also consider related subjects at postgraduate-level.
We are one of only a few UK universities to build professional work placements into every degree. You'll complete two professional work placements, which will give you the chance to graduate with up to three months' professional work experience without having to take a sandwich year out. You could complete your placements in the UK or abroad, and we also have partnerships with international charities. These have given our students the chance to work on health campaigns through the medium of sport in developing countries such as Rwanda, Cameroon, Uganda and Kenya.
