BA (Hons) Interior Design is an exciting and innovative course facilitating understanding of all aspects of interior design and visual communication through different media, strategies and digital platforms.
The course focuses on training designers to have the core skills in interior design and to communicate using a variety of tools, pitch (story-tell), demonstrate strong consumer/user understanding, and a have mind-set that takes measured risks and that perceives and creates opportunities. Students will be resourceful and pursue opportunities through having technical skills (from spatial drawing to augmented reality production) essential to the contemporary interior design discipline.
Through a series individual and team design studio projects delivered across each course level, students will develop a personal approach to the process of design. The projects will encourage and challenge students to develop a practice that understands the different contexts, interactions, narratives and materiality of space within contemporary culture, with a focus on urban and city environments.
Technical and Digital Literacy are essential to the contemporary interior design discipline, and the course has a strong focus on developing design ability that displays creative and intellectual capabilities applicable to problem solving. Students will be encouraged to develop professional attitudes, initiative and motivation as benefits the needs of contemporary employers.
There is opportunity to develop a career in architectural and interior design environment both locally and globally. Graduates will look to pursue careers predominately in interior design. However the course also offers an opportunity for careers within the creative design industry sector.
To gain real life work experience with an interior design company/ies, the course supports a range of opportunities, one being through the Professional and Collaborative Practices module where students work with industry partners and have the opportunity to work within the industry sector. The course builds on this work experience again in the third year L6, and advances student’s individuality and expertise through both studio specialisms and a mentoring scheme leading the student towards successful employment. Other opportunities opening up professional experience and student confidence to work with interior design professionals are through meeting with industry consultants from the course advisory panel for the course and through the industry speakers coming to give talks and workshops on the course throughout the course delivery.
Effective communication skills both written and visual, collaborative working, self -management and entrepreneurial skills are embedded into the course to ensure that graduates have the tools and attributes to compete in an international design environment.
