Games Design and Development specialisms in Modelling and Animation

The video games industry is now more lucrative than the film industry and the UK is right in the thick of it – with companies such as Hello Games and Rockstar North leading the way.

This course will set you up for a future in games design – an industry that sees no signs of slowing. No prior knowledge of graphic design or modelling is necessary, just a passion for gaming and a creative streak.

You'll learn the technical and creative sides of the games industry – scripting languages such as JavaScript and C# as well as learning about game theory and design.

You will experience 3D modelling and the principles of creating, rigging and controlling models in games engines.

Once you have the basics in place, you will develop your games design skills through practical projects that require creative solutions. You will be able to create and market your own computer games.

The final year project enables you to develop your skills in a key area of games design and development creating a deep knowledge of a specialist area and see a product through from initiation to completion.

* Designed for those who wish to pursue a career in computer game development and/or developing gaming content for media organisations, focusing on environment design, character modelling and animation.

* Provides strong grounding in computer game development and interactive media

Not only is Greenwich a serene and magnificent place to study, it's also close to Canary Wharf and the city – making this an ideal location for work and leisure experience.

Throughout the programme, there are guest talks given by distinguished speakers from industry - many based in Canary Wharf. We have an excellent community of gamers from a diverse range of backgrounds to challenge in gaming events and work with on Game Jams. We have an active Computer Club which organises fun computer-related field trips and is a great way to make new friends and discuss ideas.

This programme is accredited by the British Computer Society, the professional body for software engineers – the Deputy President of the BCS was a dean at the University of Greenwich.


Past students have been employed in Triple A studios such as Sega, Rare, Konami and Media Molecule as well as smaller indie studios.

Graduates can pursue varied careers in the entertainment and games industries. In addition, graduates have found positions as Virtual Reality Developers, multimedia specialists, video editors/producers, Quality Assurance testers, 3D/2D animators, web designers, in development roles and many other exciting areas within creative computing environments.

What opportunities are there to study abroad?

The Erasmus Programme is a European Union (EU) student exchange programme available for students and provides a grant towards the cost of studying aboard. We have a dedicated placement team who will support students in finding work placements and internships as well as giving students practical advice on writing CVs and preparing for interviews and assessment centres. Students will also have the option of working with other Greenwich students on real world applications for clients as part of our GWizards project.
