The Joint Honours English and French degree allows you to study two complementary disciplines, both of which ask you to think carefully about culture and to pay close attention to detail while comprehending and analysing language.
Students on this course will join departments with top researchers in a great diversity of fields and will be encouraged to develop expertise and research skills relevant to both subjects, while also considering the relationships between them.
You will develop distinct but complementary skills: for example in English you will be asked to write commentaries on, or translate passages from, literary texts written before 1740 in order to demonstrate your comprehension of earlier forms of English. In French you will undertake translation and commentary exercises, developing written and spoken language skills. In both disciplines you will be provided with the opportunity to study literary texts in their social, political and historical contexts.
You will spend a mandatory year abroad in a French-speaking environment to improve your language skills and global citizenship.
All English and French students complete a dissertation during their final year – a project that will ask you to bring together the skills you have developed while studying both disciplines.
