Electrical and electronic engineers are highly employable in a wide range of areas beyond engineering such as IT, finance and management. Currently, there is a recognised shortage of qualified electrical/electronic engineers in the UK especially in the fast growing electronics and telecommunications industries.

Disciplines include mechanical, electrical and electronic, energy, chemicals, metals and materials, aeronautical, other aspects of transport, automotive and bioscience. The pace of technological change in engineering means that there is an increasing need for skilled workers and, according to the Engineering Council, professional engineers currently achieve salaries comparable with other professionals, for example, accountants and solicitors.
The sector is very significant in the UK, accounting for more than a third of all UK exports and remains crucial to our economy and economic recovery. The UK electronics industry is the fifth largest in the world, in respect of production, and UK Aerospace industry is the second largest in the world after the USA
